la IUSY appelle au retour à la démocratie en Thaïlande

IUSY calls for the return of Democracy in Thailand

IUSY is gravely concerned with the newest political development in Thailand. The military coup that took place on the 19^th September led by the head of the Thai army, General Sonthi Boonyaratglin has further escalated political tensions and instability within the region.

The coup leaders have declared martial law and the suspension of the country’s parliament, constitution and constitutional court. Restrictions have been imposed on the media and gatherings of more than 5 people have been banned, with penalties of up to 6 months’ prison. Furthermore the ‘new thai leaders’ have banned all meetings and other activities by political parties including the formation of new political parties.

The government of Prime Minister Thaksin has been facing increasing discontent, following corruption allegations made earlier this year. The Thai Constitutional Court annulled a snap general election called in April as undemocratic, which was boycotted by the opposition parties and millions of voters. Since the election Thailand has been run by a caretaker administration, and has been struggling to get back to normal.

IUSY believes that Thailand has made substantial progress in the last 15 years since its last coup in stabilisng its democracy and becoming a beacon of light for democracy in the heart of South East Asia. Now as we see from this weeks events the country’s institutions have again proved to be weak and its military shown up to be still untrusting of democracy.

IUSY strongly condemns the involvement of the Thai military in the political process as this is totally against the fundamental principles of democratic governance. IUSY has no sympathies to the autocratic Prime Minister Thaksin but his removal from office must be done through democratic means and process. The military has done Thai democracy and rule of law a great disservice and undermines international confidence in the institution of governance in Thailand.

IUSY calls for an immediate return to democracy and the reinstatement of the country’s parliament, constitution and constitutional court. IUSY hopes that a peaceful resolution to the political crisis will be reached in which all human, civil and political rights of all citizens are respected.

Moreover, IUSY condemns the announcement of Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratglin leader of the military coup that new elections will take place in a year’s time once a new constitution has been drawn up. Elections, which have been scheduled for later this year, should take place as soon as possible and should be undertaken under the auspices of a properly constituted electoral commission.
