Each year, the last week-end of August, The French Socialist Party and the MJS organize the Summer University in La Rochelle (West of France). This summer university is the last one before the presidential elections, in May 2007. So this year, all the program is around the project that have been adopted two months ago. But of course, the media will focus on the competition between our different candidates. The members of the Party will elect him or her in November. Until now, we still have, at least 5 possible candidates (6 with Lionel Jospin).MJS will have is own program (see the PS program here). This year, 500 young socialists will participate to our summer university. Me, i have the responsability of two things: the main conference on Middle-East and Lebanon, and a workshop on Latin America. For the conference on Middle-East, we have a speaker (Tarek) of PYO, the Youth organization of the PSP of Lebanon, and a representative of MERETZ of Israel (Yoav). A good opportunity to launch a
dialogue on the way to go out of the very tense situation in Middle-East and debate for example on the proposal of a new Madrid Conference to launch a new peace process in the region. It is just an example, and i'm sure the debate will be very interesting. On the debate on Latin America, we have Antoine Blanca who is a former ambassador and wrote a book on the Left in Latin America. We also have Jean-Jacques Kourlianski, the national delegate of the PS on Latin America. MJS France is invited by the Youth of PT (Brazil) to participate to the electoral campagn of Lula in september. We will participate to a big event with Lula and the Youth leaders in "Cita de Deus", a favela in Rio De Janeiro (look at the Movie "La cité de Dieu" in French). So this workshop will be very important for us. On the international level, we also have a workshop on Europe with Ania, the secretary general of ECOSY, Brian, the international secretary of MJS Belgium, Benoit Hamon a french MEP and Benjamin Vetele, the Vice-president of the student union (UNEF). During this summer university, we also welcome a delegation of Democratic Party of Moldova (see my post here).
But the main point of the MJS university will be the meetings with all the socialist candidate for the presidential elections. We will meet Laurent Fabius, François Hollande, Dominique Strauss-Khan, Jack Lang, Martine Aubry and Lionel Jospin. A very taff program... I will try to blog during this week-end as it seems we will have Wireless everywhere. So if you have questions, just let in comments and i will try to give you an answer!

A new Madrid conference for a peace process... So nice and so far. Of course, Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero could offer Madrid for a conference like Felipe González did, but is there a true intention of achieving a peace way?? Just a deep pity...
Well, about your Summer University, I read in Le Monde that Segolene Royal is also "a candidate to be candidate" for the presidential election. The question is on the table and it's still hot: Why doesn't she have a meeting with MJS in the Summer University? is she losing an opportunity or closing her options?
Which are the main differences among all the candidates?? Why five?? Are they so different?
@chus
1) This is a real problem. The proposal of a new madrid conference is a conference of Meretz. But what's about the lebanese? After one month of war with more than 1000 killed people, what is the relevency of such a proposal. This is a hudge debate.
2) On Segolene, i see that you are very well informed ;-) Well she was invited and accepted our invitation since months. At the last moment, she decided to cancel. No comment, or maybe a comment later in the week-end about this.
3) For the candidates, they have each their own profile with some positive points and some negative one. Fabius is more on the left even if some have some doubts about his real convictions. DSK is seen as a good economist. Lang, he has a very good image because of his past of minister of education and culture. Segolene is a kind of new phenomena, seen as new by the people, and Lionel Jospin is the experience. More or less, that is the point but sure that other will have other vision of it..
Update!!
Le Monde, today, August 25th, information about Summer University PS and presidential candidates:
Le Monde had read my mind yesterday, :D
Désolé de ne pas pouvoir être avec vous à La Rochelle, mais c'est contre ma volonté :-(
Bonne UE !
